
Westray Development Trust (WDT), a community-based charity, was established in 1999
with a mission to develop the economic, social, and cultural sustainability of the Westray
community by harnessing the quality of the island’s resources, people, and island
environment. Westray, located at the edge of the Orkney archipelago, north of mainland
Scotland, is a thriving island home to approximately 600 people. WDT was established by
and for the Westray community, and is remains managed by the community through it’s
members and locally-elected Trustees.
WDT runs a successful series of grant programmes for the Westray community in addition to
a community business loan scheme. Successful and ongoing WDT projects also include the
Bayview Housing Project, the Westray Defibrillator Network, the Höfn Youth Centre, Bargain
Box Community Fundraising Shop, and the Westray Community Garden.
Job Description
The Operations Manager role is a key post within Westray Development Trust and is pivotal
to the effective development of the organisation and delivery of services on behalf of its
members and wider stakeholders.
WDT’s Operations Manager will be responsible for managing WDT projects and
programmes, line managing office and project staff, engaging with and supporting the
Westray community, and being the public face of the Development Trust. All in order to
support WDT and the Board of Trustees in the charity’s mission to develop the economic,
social, and cultural sustainability of the Westray community. WDT’s main income is from a
900KW wind turbine. An island conference is planning for early next year to decide the future
priorities of the trust. The oppositions Manager will take the leading roll in organising the

Hybrid working is possible with this post, however the successful applicant will be required to
be, or become, resident in Westray.
Evening work will be required as part of this role to meet with volunteers.
